The Megaphone

About the Megaphone

Southwestern University’s student newspaper began in 1907 when students came before the faculty asking for their support in starting a student newspaper. The first issues were published during the week of commencement as The Commencement Daily, and this merged into a weekly publication the next year.

The Megaphone has since evolved, and currently reflects on campus life and providing a student perspective on topics important to the community. Megaphone staff in the past have covered important pieces on the University as well as visits by distinguished speakers such as Helen Keller, Jacob Riis, and Carl Sandberg. More recently, The Megaphone interviewed visiting speakers including T.C. Boyle for Writer’s Voice and NPR’s Scott Simon for the Shilling Lecture Series.

The Megaphone continues to publish in print, moving to a monthly paper in 2014 to align with the University’s focus on sustainability. The online website, to debut this Fall, will offer weekly updates on topics central to campus life.
